Classic Golf GTI exhausts: Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 VR6 and Mk4 1.8T
The Mk1 GTI (1976-1983) can take a manifold-back or downpipe-back system, and the Mk1 GTI 1.8 Cabriolet built until 1992 has its own downpipe-back listing. For the Mk2 GTI (1984-1992) there are full systems for both the 8v and 16v, plus a front pipe-back system and a free-flow manifold for the 8v. The Mk3 GTI VR6 (1992-1998) has a cat-back, and the Mk4 GTI 1.8T (1998-2004) offers a cat-back with a choice of sports cat or de-cat downpipe.
Mk5 and Mk6 Golf GTI, including the Edition 30 and Edition 35
The Mk5 GTI 2.0T FSI (2004-2009) and the 230PS Edition 30 (2006-2009) are listed separately, so pick the one that matches your badge. Each has a cat-back, a turbo-back with sports cat, a race rear silencer delete (a louder, motorsport-oriented part) and a choice of sports cat, cast HJS sports cat, cast race cat and de-cat downpipes.
The Mk6 GTI 2.0 TSI 210PS (2009-2013) and the Edition 35 (2011-2012) are split the same way, and both offer turbo-back systems alongside the cat-back and downpipes. The standard Mk6 adds a turbo-back with no cat and a cast HJS sports cat downpipe.
Golf GTI Mk7 to Mk8.5: Performance Pack, GPF and market
The Mk7 GTI (2013-2016) has a cat-back plus sports cat, cast race cat and de-cat downpipes. The 2017-2018 Mk7.5 GTI without a petrol particulate filter is split into Performance Pack and non Performance Pack listings, each with the same four parts, so check your spec before ordering. The GPF-equipped Mk7.5 TCR and Performance Pack (2019-2020) has its own cat-back and a GPF/OPF bypass, which is a louder, motorsport-oriented option.
The Mk8 GTI with OPF/GPF (2020-2024) takes a particulate filter-back system, in standard form or with a Golf R style quad outlet, and there is a Golf R style Maxton diffuser upgrade kit to suit the quad-outlet version. Non-GPF North American Mk8 GTIs (2021-2024) have their own sports cat and de-cat downpipes. The Mk8 GTI Clubsport, the Mk8.5 GTI and the Mk8.5 GTI Clubsport (2024 on) each have their own filter-back, sports cat downpipe and de-cat downpipe.
Golf GTI downpipes, resonators and tips
Sports cat and HJS sports cat downpipes keep a catalyst, de-cats are for off-road and competition use only and will fail an MOT emissions test, and on OPF/GPF cars some cat options include a GPF delete, a louder, motorsport-oriented choice. Most need an ECU remap, and many are offered to fit either the OE system or a Milltek cat-back. The full list is in manifolds, de-cats and sports cats.
Resonated systems are quieter with less motorway drone, non-resonated are louder, and race versions are louder again. Some systems add a part-resonated Road+ choice. Tips range from GT-80 on older models to GT-100, GT-115, carbon JET-100 and JET-115, and Clubsport ovals; compare them on our exhaust tip styles page.
