Golf R32 and Mk6 Golf R exhausts

The Mk4 R32 3.2 V6 4WD (2002-2005) has free-flow manifolds, a hi-flow sports cat, a cat replacement pipe and a cat-back. The Mk5 R32 (2005-2009) adds a manifold with sports cat and Active Valve Control to the same mix. Cat replacement pipes remove the catalyst, so treat them as off-road and competition parts that will fail an MOT emissions test. The Mk6 R 2.0 TFSI 270PS (2009-2013) has a cat-back plus sports cat, cast HJS sports cat, cast race cat and de-cat downpipes.

Golf R Mk7 and Mk7.5: 76mm EC approved or 80mm race?

Mk7 R 300PS (2014-2016) parts come in two families. The ECE approved 76.2mm family has two turbo-back with sports cat systems, a Road+ centre silencer, a de-cat downpipe, Active Valve Control and a valve delete module. The 80mm race family is the louder option, with its own cat-back, centre silencer, sports cat and de-cat downpipes and valve control. Buy downpipes and valve parts from the same family as your system.

The Mk7.5 R adds a GPF split. The 310PS non-GPF car (2017-2021) has a 76mm EC approved family, including a Road+ centre silencer and valve delete module, and an 80mm race family. The 300PS GPF car (2019-2022) has its own cat-backs, downpipes and valve control. Estate and Variant owners have separate listings for the Mk7 R (2015-2017) and the Mk7.5 R in non-GPF (2018-2019) and GPF (2019-2020) form.

Golf R Mk8 and Mk8.5: GPF or North American?

Mk8 R cars with a GPF (2021-2024) take the particulate filter-back system, Active Valve Control and sports cat or de-cat downpipes, and there is an HJS Tuning ECE downpipe that keeps a catalyst. Non-GPF North American Mk8 R cars (2022-2024) take a cat-back with their own downpipes.

The Mk8.5 R 333PS follows the same pattern: OPF/GPF cars from 2024 have a filter-back, valve control and downpipes, while non-GPF North American cars from 2025 have a cat-back and downpipes. The Mk8 and Mk8.5 Golf GTI is split by market in the same way.

Valves, resonators and tips for your Golf R

Active Valve Control opens and closes the exhaust valves on demand; some kits come with Bluetooth app control or a plug-and-play remote. Systems are offered valved or non-valved, and resonated, part-resonated Road+, non-resonated or race: resonated is quieter with less drone, race the loudest. Most downpipes need an ECU remap and can be ordered to suit the OE system or a Milltek cat-back, and GPF delete cat options are louder, motorsport-oriented choices. Tips include GT-100 (some slash-cut), GT-115, carbon JET-100 and JET-115, and ovals; see the tip styles guide.
