Golf Mk4 and Mk5: VR6, V5, 337 and TDI
The Mk4 VR6 2WD and V5 (1999-2004) share a cat-back, and the 4-Motion V6 (2000-2004) has its own. The 180bhp 337 Anniversary (2002-2004) has a cat-back plus a sports cat or de-cat downpipe, and the 1.9 TDI, PD or non-PD (2000-2004), has a cat-back and a large-bore downpipe. From the Mk5 (2004-2009) there are cat-backs for the 2.0 TDI 140PS and the GT 2.0 TDI 170PS with DPF.
Golf GTD, GT, Alltrack and GTE: Mk6 to Mk8.5
The Mk6 (2009-2013) has cat-backs for the GT 1.4 TSI 160PS and GT 2.0 TDI 140PS, and a filter-back for the GTD 170PS. The Mk7 GTD 185PS (2013-2016) has a cat-back.
The Mk7 2.0 TFSI Estate and Alltrack 4MOTION (2016-2021) has the widest choice: a cat-back, a Road+ centre silencer, and sports cat, cast race cat and de-cat downpipes. The 1.8 TSI Alltrack 4Motion and the Mk7.5 1.5 TSI Evo GT and R-Line (2017-2021) each have a cat-back. For the Mk8.5 GTE 1.5 with OPF/GPF, there is a single filter-back system for 2025-on cars.
Downpipes and sound levels for the Golf
Sports cat downpipes keep a catalyst; the de-cat options are for off-road and competition use only and will fail an MOT emissions test. Most downpipes need an ECU remap and can be ordered to fit the OE system or a Milltek cat-back. Resonated systems are quieter with less motorway drone, non-resonated louder, and tips include GT-80, GT-100 and GT-115 styles shown on our tip styles page.
